Atlanta -- March 4, 2022 -- The top high school
runners, throwers and jumpers in Georgia will go head-to-head at Georgia Tech
this spring, culminating the track and field season with the strongest,
deepest, most competitive single-day meet of the year. The second annual
Wingfoot Night of Champions is scheduled for May 21, under the lights at the
Ramblin' Wreck track. As the season gets underway this month, meet organizers
Atlanta Track Club have announced the entry standards for the 14 disciplines
that will be contested.
Up to 16 athletes will be accepted into
each event, with state champions from the eight GHSA classifications as well as
GISA state champions automatically qualifying regardless of their time or mark.
The remaining spots will be filled by athletes who achieve the automatic standard
during the season and then by those who achieve the minimum standard. You can
find the complete list of entry standards below.
"The quality of track and field competition
in Georgia at the high school level is second to none," said Rich Kenah, CEO of
Atlanta Track Club. "To be able to showcase the state's incredible talent in
one meet is an amazing opportunity for the athletes to face their toughest
challenges of the season and for fans to see some very exciting competitions."
The inaugural Wingfoot Night of
Champions lived up to the hype with five performances landing on the state's
all-time top 10 list including the fastest ever girls' 800m run in Georgia - as
wild crowds packed the stands, a DJ mixed live beats and a jumbotron captured
the field events and trackside interviews from three-time Olympic Gold Medalist
Gail Devers. Details of this year's meet are still being finalized, but
athletes can expect guest appearances from track and field stars , a
commemorative adidas bag and a one-of-a-kind trophy for the athletes who win
the title of "best in the state."
Registration for the Wingfoot Night of
Champions opens on April 1 on Milesplit. All athletes must register regardless
of whether they have the automatic qualifier. Entry lists will be announced on
May 18. Updates will be posted on Milesplit as well as on Atlanta Track Club's
social media.
